Halifax at War by William D. Naftel

Halifax at War takes two Atlantic Book Awards
cbc.ca - Thursday, April 16, 2009

Nova Scotia writers, publishers and illustrators swept the top honours at the Atlantic Book Awards gala Wednesday night in Dartmouth.

Writer William D. Naftel was a double-winner for his non-fiction book, Halifax at War , which picked up the Dartmouth Book Award for Non-Fiction and the inaugural Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing.

Naftel hopes the recognition will get more people interested in Halifax's history.

"Most people, all they think about the war is the riots afterwards," he said. "Halifax did much more than that. There was a volunteer spirit here that was just incredible. And this book, to some degree, I hope is going to remedy that lack of information and appreciation."

After spending the past three summers researching and writing the book, Naftel plans to take this one off.

Other winners include:

Shauntay Grant - Up Home (children's picture book).
Budge Wilson - Before Green Gables (fiction).
Ian Colford - Evidence (collection of short stories).
Eric Orchard - illustration for The Terrible, Horrible, Smelly Pirate.
Anne Simpson - Falling (fiction).
Dan Soucoup - general manager of Nimbus Publishing.
Susan Tooke - illustration for Up Home.

Of the nine award categories, four are exclusively for Nova Scotians or for books about Nova Scotia.
