Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)

This was a really good film filled with vignettes from different celebrities. I LOVED it, actually. It plays on how we view celebrity and our common humanity. Yay!

I saw this at the film festival one year and LOVED IT.

I bought a copy used when I saw it on sale.

Did you have a favourite?

They were all so good! But I liked Meg and Jack White, the Cate Blanchett cousins, and...the Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan vignettes.

Yes I enjoyed those ones too.

Seeing Cate Blanchett act opposite of herself convinced me that she was an actor to be reckoned with.

Loved the Jack and Meg White one, but I love anyone who randomly drops Tesla references.

I thought the Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan one was a cute twist on the obsession with celebrity.

The big comic performance is a very obvious thing to do. The bolder, more inventive thing sometimes is the subtler, understated performance with minute shades and variations. If you start to disrespect the character you're playing, or play it too much for laughs, that can work for a sketch, it will sell some gags, but it's all technique. It's like watching a juggler - you can be impressed by it, but it's not going to touch you in any way. ~Steve Coogan

Tropic of Thunder - Never Go Full Retard
Have you seen Tropic of Thunder? It was that comedy with Ben Stiller that sends up Hollywood. Anyhow your quote from Steve Coogan about being subtle versus over the top reminded me of quote from the movie. Ben Stiller's character is an actor named Tugg Speedman who is infamous for playing a retarded character "Simple Jack". It's kind of his weakest role. One of his fellow actors in a new movie points out to him "You never go full retard"

Kirk Lazarus: Everybody knows you never go full retard.
Tugg Speedman: What do you mean?
Kirk Lazarus: Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, 'Rain Man,' look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho'. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, 'Forrest Gump.' Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded. Peter Sellers, "Being There." Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don't buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, "I Am Sam." Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed...

I've never seen that movie, but I do appreciate Stiller's over-the-top comedy. I guess it has to be done in the right way? Comedy is hard. Church!
