Hiroshige's Night View of Saruwakacho

Cafe Terrace at Night (Van Gogh)

"Legend has it that Hiroshige determined to become a ukiyo-e artist when he saw the prints of his near-contemporary, Hokusai....He began by being taught the Kano school's style by his friend, Okajima Rinsai. These studies (such as a study of perspective in the Dutch images imported) prepared him for an apprenticeship." source

Van Gogh loved Japanese use of color and often copied the Japanese Masters works for practice. Some of them still survive today in the museum at Amsterdam. =]

I am such a Van Gogh nut. And a Japanese Art fan. Actually if I had stayed in school, my goal was to get my DR. in Asian art...

That is so cool! So, my instincts were probably correct. ;)

Are you attracted to a particular style of Japanese artwork?

I know it sounds kind of silly, but I have always been facsinated with the changes that occured in Japanese art during the Allied occupation. My family brought home lots of breathtaking artwork, and I love the idea of comparing the influence of the war and occupation on the art of the people from before and after with what was done during. Blah I guess I can't explain it so well as I thought...

Actually, that sounds very interesting! What sort of artworks did your family bring back?

They brought back a tea and saki china set, some figurines, some watercolor paintings, and some brass baubles in the shape of famous Japanese landmarks.

A friend from Japan gave me some Japanese mugs as a birthday present a few years ago. They have geishas on them (just the heads and shoulders). I try not to use them for fear of breaking them.

Your treasures sound lovely. :)
